Renewable energy
Renewable energy comes from resources which are naturally
replenished. These sources include the sun, wind, rain, tides, and geothermal
heat. According to the 2007 Global Status Report, 18% of global final
energy consumption came from such sources in 2006.
Solar energy is a source of renewable energy which is harnessed through
the use solar panels. These can convert sunlight into electricity either
directly or indirectly, through photovoltaic or solar thermal methods
respectively. Wind energy is another renewable source which is harnessed
through the use of wind turbines.
Renewable energy sources are considered sustainable in the sense that
these resources are capable of remaining balanced. However, this doesn’t
mean that sustainability comes inherently. Especially in the cases of
biomass and geothermal energy, there is the necessity of wise energy
management.
