Solar energy FAQs

Can I have a solar power system for my home and still be connected to city power?

Yes. Almost all systems are designed as on-grid systems. This means that they are designed for interconnection with utility power. Most owners of solar electrical systems use their systems to reduce reliance on city power as opposed to replacing it.

Can I add mirrors or reflectors around my residential solar power system to increase the amount of sunlight it absorbs?

No. The solar panels only generate power from direct sunlight.

If I rent a home or apartment, can I still get a solar electrical system?

Having a residential solar power system installed requires a contract with the property owner. This contract includes a potential property lien. The property owner would have to set it up.

How long do solar lights stay on?

This answer depends on the size of the panel as well as the battery. In general, about ten hours of light is not an unrealistic expectation. The light will usually start off stronger and brighter at the beginning of each night.
